The Powerful Moroccan "Evil Eye" (Part II)

I should write a book if I wanna go on explaining the ultimate power of the Moroccan “Evil Eye,” “Al-Ain” or “Al-Taqwas” (click to read the first part); it’s a culture fueled by ignorance and destroying its members and their social and family relations.

When I was a teenager, some of my friends got visas to go to Europe; their moms were asking them to hide the news from everybody, including their family members, to avoid the harmful effects of the “Evil Eye.” Sometimes, they even hide this news from their sisters and brothers. Getting a visa is the dream of millions of young Moroccans, which is not only difficult but almost impossible to get in Morocco.

Even when they book the flight ticket and reach their final destination, they continue to hide the truth from their relatives and not inform anybody about their new whereabouts outside of Morocco. This is the ultimate dream of the ones stuck in the country, avoiding the intense power of the “Evil Eye” when people discover that they’re gone. Their moms will spread the rumors that the ones who made it to Europe (most of the time illegally) are struggling to look for a place to stay, a job, etc., to make people think that they made it there, but they’re not doing that good, still struggling a bit.

The more you expose what you have and that you’re doing well and your life is getting better, the stronger the “Evil Eye” will hit you, and more damage will be caused. If you have a new car and you get into an accident, it will be on the “Evil Eye” later on. If someone stares too long at the bride, she may fall at any moment during her walk to the wedding party table. This destructive look is haunting millions of Moroccans and Arabs, revealing the strong Moroccan belief in the damaging ability of Moroccans’ premium nightmare: the “Evil Eye.”
